Welcome to NADSA’s 78th season of Classical Music concerts in Newton Abbot; seven performances again this year, and here are all the dates for your diaries…

All concerts will be at the Courtenay Centre; those on a Friday will begin at 7.30pm whilst those in the darker months will be held on Sundays and will start at 3.30pm.

Hathor Duo share their name with the Egyptian Goddess of love, beauty, and music, and on Friday 20th September Meera Maharaj (Flute) and Lucy Nolan (Harp) bring their particular brand of music to the Courtenay Centre.

Meera graduated with Distinction in her Masters, studying with Michael Cox at the Royal Academy of Music.  In 2017, she graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music (first class honours), studying with Wissam Boustany and Laura Jellicoe.  She has won a number of competitions both as a solo flautist, and with guitarist James Girling, as the Meraki Duo.  She graduated with Distinction in her Masters, studying with Michael Cox at the Royal Academy of Music.

Graduating from Oxford University and the Royal Northern College of music with Distinctions in postgraduate degrees, Lucy was the recipient of a number of prizes and a finalist in the RNCM’s Gold Medal weekend, the highest accolade awarded for performance. As well as featuring in performances for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4, she regularly works with orchestras such as the Hallé, Manchester Concert Orchestra and the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Their programme for us is called 'Dreams and Fantasies' and will include

This concert is sponsored by the Torbay Recorded Music Society, for which we are very grateful.

Tickets may be obtained online at www.nadsa.co.uk, but if you’re not able to use that method, please contact 01626 717730 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Tickets for this season's concerts are priced at £21 for non-members, but only £18 to members of Nadsa.  Subject to availability, Students pay only £5 and there is no charge for accompanied School Children.

Why not become a member and take advantage of the lower rates?  It will cost £20 for one person to become a member, or £30 for a couple, and you can then buy tickets for individual concerts for only £18.  Alternatively a season ticket for all seven concerts costs £90 per person, £180 for a couple.  This way, a couple will save £14, so a season ticket may well be worth considering.  Contact Ineke, our membership secretary, at  ineke@nadsa.co.uk

In the wider area, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are at the Great Hall at Exeter with their programme 'Elgar's Enigma' on Thursday 26th September, also featuring music by Rachmaninov and Wagner.

'Baroque ‘n’ Bizarre' is the title of Devon Baroque's next concert on Sunday 22nd September at St. Mary's Church, Totnes – a programme of German music with wind soloists Zoe Shevlin (bassoon), Gail Hennessy and Oonagh Lee (oboes)

Not sure if the BBC will show this, but on September 8th Clare Hammond will be playing in their annual Proms Season.  Why is this of interest to NADSA?  Because she'll be playing here for us next year!

Moving away from music, I know that as discerning music-lovers many of you are also supporters of a wider range of arts, and so I commend to you Devon Open Studios,  This is a county-wide event running from 7th to 22nd September when artists and craftspeople open their doors to welcome anyone who’d like to chat and to see them at work.  The full brochure includes 42 venues in Teignbridge and four in Torbay.  Come and see me and seven other talented local makers in a range of disciplines at venue T29, Ullacombe Farm shop near Haytor.

That’s all for now; happy listening, and don’t forget to put the concert dates in your diary and do think about joining NADSA.  Oh yes - and feel free to forward this to any of your friends who may share your musical interests.

That's all for now; happy listening,
John R
