The internationally acclaimed Carducci Quartet brings their exceptional artistry to nadsa on 19th September, presenting a programme that spans nearly two centuries of string quartet innovation. Described by The Strad as demonstrating “a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose,” this Royal Philharmonic Society Award-winning ensemble offers an evening where Romantic intimacy meets Soviet intensity, with a rare gem of 19th-century chamber music at its heart.
About the Concert
The programme opens with Schubert’s Tenth Quartet, written when he was only 16. It is light-hearted, overflowing with good cheer, and amply demonstrates Schubert’s budding talent, and gift for melody.
Following this, we encounter the remarkable String Quartet in E-flat major by Fanny Mendelssohn—a composer whose sophisticated musical language is finally receiving the recognition it deserves. Her quartet reveals the same melodic gift and structural mastery that distinguished her famous brother, yet with a distinctly personal voice that speaks across the centuries.
After the interval, the evening transforms with Shostakovich’s Second Quartet, a work of characteristic emotional complexity from 1944. The Carducci Quartet’s particular affinity for Shostakovich—celebrated in their award-winning Shostakovich15 project—ensures an interpretation of uncommon insight and authority. Their recordings of the composer’s quartets have garnered international acclaim, making them among the finest interpreters of his chamber music today.
