About the Concert

Two of Britain’s most celebrated musicians unite for an extraordinary afternoon of musical exploration that promises to blur the boundaries between jazz, classical, and folk traditions. Saxophonist Trish Clowes, Associate Artist at Wigmore Hall, and pianist Ross Stanley, twice British Jazz Award winner, have spent years crafting their distinctive sound world—one that has earned standing ovations from Wigmore Hall to the Royal Festival Hall and garnered widespread critical acclaim for their 2024 album Journey to Where.

The programme beautifully illustrates the duo’s remarkable versatility, moving seamlessly from Clowes’s own contemplative compositions to the sacred beauty of Herbert Howells’s Gloucester Service—a work particularly close to Stanley’s heart from his days as an organ scholar at Marlborough College. The inclusion of Lili Boulanger’s ethereal Pie Jesu alongside Antonio Carlos Jobim’s sophisticated Brazilian miniatures demonstrates their fearless approach to repertoire, whilst Rogers and Hart’s Spring is Here showcases their gift for reimagining beloved standards. This eclectic selection reflects what critics have praised as their “absorbing and seamless eclecticism”—music that reveals new layers with each encounter.

About the Artists

Clowes brings her reputation as “one of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition” to bear alongside Stanley’s extraordinary musical intelligence, described by The Irish Times as echoing “the quiet virtuosity of John Taylor, the harmonic sophistication of Bill Evans and the lyrical fluency of Wynton Kelly.” Together, they create what Jamie Cullum has called “vital music full of swing, emotion and atmosphere.”

This promises to be an unmissable afternoon where technical mastery meets profound musical understanding—a rare opportunity to witness two artists at the pinnacle of their craft exploring the infinite possibilities that emerge when boundaries dissolve and pure musical communication takes centre stage.
